Gauthier ‘Gauth’ Boccard

Who is Gauthier Boccard?

I’m a belgian defender playing for the Waterloo Ducks and the Red lions.
I have won 3 titles with Watducks and have played around 135 caps for the national team. I’m born the 26 of august 1991 and living in Waterloo.

When and why did you start to play hockey?

I started hockey when I was 4 years old. I always have been present beside the pitch because my father was playing hockey.

How could describe yourself as a player?

I am an attacking defender. I’m always trying to play forward and look for the give&go’s with my midfielders. I am a different type of defender because I was a striker in the past.

Which is a strenght in the the attacking 25 yards.

Can you tell us about your days in Brazil with the national team?

The tournament has been fantastic for us. We knew that we had the capacities to perform well during the Olympics. We can be very proud of our silver medal even if for sure we wanted to have gold but if you have a look to the tournemant we had some amazing games. We have beaten England, Australia to finish top of our pool and The Netherlands to reach the final !!
We can be disapointed with the final but Argentina did an amazing campaign and showed some impressive performances.

After this two Olympics game, you think that our sport is getting much better?

Our sport is always improving !
Where I think we made a big step forward is in the fitness level of the teams. The physical capacities of the players to perform at their best during all the tournament with not a lot of rest days comparing with other sports is very impressive.

Wishes for the future with the Red Lions?

I wish we continue to go in the same way than the last year. Some experienced players stopped with the national team so we have to integrate some young talents. Our goal is now to be on the podium at every big tournemant.

What are your ambitions inside and outside the field?

On the pitch I want to continue to grow with the national team and like I said finish on the podium after every big competititon. At club level I want to reach the play-offs again after we missed it last year for the first time in 14 years. Our second goal of the season is to get back in the EHL !

Outside the pitch I have stopped my studies for hockey. Hockey is my priority but I want to follow some training courses to develop myself for after hockey.

In your opinion, who is the best player in the world?

Very difficult to say. Every team has 2 or 3 players that are really on the top of hockey !

A player like Arthur Van Doren for example is still in the Rising star selection, but he can be one of the best in the world !!

Most special moments of your carrer?

I have some incredible moments with hockey !
With the Red Lions i have the two olympic games, London for the opening ceremony and RIO with the win of the semi-final ! With Waterloo ducks it was in 2012 when we won the competition. It was my first title and I had the chance to score the golden goal.

Hockey Idols?

I don’t really have hockey idols but my idol is a football player… Zinedine Zidane.
